Aircraft, Beech Aircraft, Bell Helicopter, and IBM enabled Schweizer

Aircraft to stay afloat in a very challenging economic cycle.

Our sailplane volume decreased in 1980; only twenty-two new units were delivered. We attributed this reduction primarily to the high cost of borrowing money (bank interest rates were running from 16 percent to 18 percent) and the strong US dollar (this made foreign sailplanes comparatively inexpensive).

SAC’s Engineering Department, headed by Les Schweizer, developed a new all-metal sailplane, the SGS 1–36. It replaced the twenty-five-year-old 1–26. The 1–36 was expected to have about the same production cost but a 35 percent performance improvement. Our sales department was able to obtain a backlog of forty orders. Because the 1–36 was not FAA-certified until October, only seven sailplanes were delivered in 1980.
